Facts and Trivia- Lemmon won as Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ensign Pulver. This was the last screen appearance by William Powell. Lemmon's oft co-star Walter Matthau played Powell's role in the sequel Ensign Pulver which featured none of the original cast. John Ford took ill during the shoot and production was completed by Mervyn Leroy. Mister Roberts enjoyed an 6-year run on stage and playwright Josh Logan adapted his play for the screen. Fonda always listed Roberts as one of his favorite roles and played the character on Broadway. The cast included John Ford stalwarts Ward Bond, Harry Carey Jr, and Patrick Wayne (son of Ford's close friend John Wayne).
